Children don’t need to wait until they have learnt all nine phonemes that the grapheme <a> can represent to figure out the words ant, any, water, was, scary, village, father, about and table. This matters, because we could never explicitly teach all of the sounds each grapheme can represent! They learn this during the self-teaching phase. So we SHOW the Code if they don't yet know it.
