Why is Re-Routing Dyslexia so different?
Re-Routing Dyslexia is for children aged 7–11 who are still struggling with reading and spelling.
At the centre, we have an 11-week plan consisting of three 45-minute sessions per week, although some parents and their children finish much earlier.
We address the underlying phonemic-awareness and phonological-working-memory difficulties and teach children how to use the technology to check any word for reading and spelling.
They use the 60-Second Spelling Routine to bond speech sounds, spelling and meaning in the orthographic lexicon, supporting instant recognition and accurate spelling in the future.
We also get them started on a series of 100 books. The first 52 are orthographically mapped, so children can see which letters form the graphemes and the sound value of each grapheme in every word.
Parents learn alongside their children. By the time children are released, they are self-teaching and their parents can map words bidirectionally with them. The adults learn as much as the children! They don’t need us any more.
That’s what makes Re-Routing Dyslexia so different. It isn’t designed to keep children in tutoring for years. It addresses what has been preventing them from progressing, gives children and their parents access to the reading and spelling code for any word, and develops the skills they need to continue learning independently.
The waiting list for places is now so long that we’re launching the programme online in the new year, and schools are asking to use it with struggling children from Grade 2 onwards.
The idea of tutoring children for years is mind-boggling to me.

What will your child experience during the Re-Routing Dyslexia program?

When a dyslexic child is shown the code, they can see which letters form the graphemes and the sound value of each grapheme in the word. This gives them access to information they may not be able to work out independently and may not previously have been shown.
Instead of being left to guess, memorise the word as a visual shape or rely on an incomplete decoding attempt, the child can see how the whole written word maps to the spoken word.
When a dyslexic child begins to map words successfully, the brain starts building reliable connections between three forms of the same word:

how the word sounds

how the word is spelt

what the word means
At first, reading requires considerable conscious effort. The child must identify the graphemes, retrieve their sound values, hold those sounds in phonological working memory, blend them and search their oral vocabulary for a matching word. If their phonemic representations are unclear or the grapheme–phoneme mapping is insecure, this process is slow, effortful and error-prone.
Showing the code reduces that uncertainty. The technology makes the structure of the word visible, showing the child exactly which letters work together as graphemes and the sound value of each grapheme in that word. The child can then blend through the word accurately and connect the resulting pronunciation with meaning.
The same information supports spelling in the opposite direction. The child can start with the spoken word, identify its phonemes and see the graphemes that represent them. This is why bidirectional mapping matters: the connections are strengthened for both reading and spelling.
When the child maps a word successfully, its letter sequence becomes bonded to its pronunciation and meaning. This isn’t the brain memorising the word as a visual picture. It is establishing a word-specific, interconnected representation of its orthography, phonology and meaning.
Each successful mapping encounter strengthens that representation. The printed word begins to activate its pronunciation and meaning more rapidly, with less need for conscious, serial decoding. This reduces the load on phonological working memory and frees cognitive capacity for fluency and comprehension.
Showing the code doesn’t do the learning for the child. It gives the child the accurate information needed to learn from the encounter. As more words become securely mapped, the child becomes increasingly able to use existing alphabetic-code knowledge, partial decoding, phonological recoding and set for variability to work out unfamiliar words independently.
Successful phonological recoding then enables the child to learn additional printed words without needing every word to be explicitly taught. This is the basis of the self-teaching process.
At the neural level, increasing reading expertise is associated with greater specialisation and coordination within the predominantly left-sided reading network. This includes systems involved in analysing speech sounds and connecting them with print, alongside the left ventral occipitotemporal region, which supports increasingly rapid recognition of familiar written words. Dyslexic readers often show less efficient or differently distributed activation within this network, although there is substantial variation between children.
Successful intervention can change how these reading systems function. Behavioural progress is much easier to establish reliably than one universal neurological pathway.
So, in practical terms, the transition is:

The technology remains available whenever the child encounters a word they cannot yet map for themselves: If they don’t know it, SHOW IT!
What Will YOU Experience During Your Child’s 11-Week Re-Routing Dyslexia Programme?
Parents learn alongside their children. Most adults are unsure how to map words, especially when the word contains graphemes or sound values they haven’t previously encountered. The technology shows the mapping clearly, giving both the parent and the child immediate access to the code.
For reading, it shows which letters form the graphemes and the sound value of each grapheme in the word. For spelling, they can work in the opposite direction, starting with the spoken word and its phonemes before identifying the graphemes that represent them.
Parents no longer have to guess, give an inaccurate explanation or tell their child to memorise the word. They can show the mapping, support the 60-Second Spelling Routine and help their child bond the word’s pronunciation, spelling and meaning.
As parents learn to map words bidirectionally, they begin to understand why their child has been struggling and what information has been missing. The adults often learn as much as the children.
Most importantly, parents learn how to provide support without creating dependence. As their child moves into the self-teaching phase, the parent can gradually step back. Their child can use the technology whenever the code in an unfamiliar word isn’t immediately accessible.
The goal is independence for the child and confidence for the parent. They don’t need to remain dependent on a tutor to explain each new word.
