Phonemies® are Phonetic Symbols for Kids and children think of them as Speech Sound Monsters. They learn the ‘Monster Sounds’ using the 2 Minute Monster video and by playing with the Monster Spelling Piano app. They 'follow the Monster Sounds to say the word' when figuring out what the word is (they are blending the sounds).
 

This process is called Speech Sound Mapping and has significant benefits for children even without the letters. It provides the foundation for reading and spelling by helping children become aware of, remember and manipulate the individual speech sounds within words. When they are confident with the sound value of the words they pay more attention to the letters that represent them. 
 

It also supports speech and language development. Children can hear the target English speech sounds as often as they need, making it easier to notice differences between sounds, practise accurate production and build confidence in their spoken communication.
