Show the Code!

Show the Code : The Visible Spelling Code

Have a free play with Emma Hartnell-Baker (Miss Emma)'s Code Mapping® Tool, which shows which letters are functioning as graphemes, which she calls Speech Sound Pics® (pictures of speech sounds). The Show the Code™ word mapping tool is aligned with the British IPA and works from left to right (shown in black), identifying grapheme boundaries throughout the text. Blue shows the split digraphs.

This was initially developed for teachers using her Speech Sound Pics® (SSP) Approach in Australia as a way to move more quickly towards orthographic mapping.

Unlike dyslexia fonts, which primarily make individual letters easier to distinguish visually, Mapped Words® show which letters work together as graphemes, making the structure of the alphabetic code visible. This directly supports the phonological processing, speech-to-print mapping and orthographic learning that many dyslexic learners find challenging. Rather than focusing on the visual appearance of letters alone, Show the Code helps learners understand how speech maps onto print, supporting accurate decoding, spelling and self-teaching. Because every reader must learn the same alphabetic code, this approach is applicable to all learners, while providing particular benefit for those who struggle to develop these mappings efficiently.

This is the Lite Version, which shows grapheme boundaries but does not include the option to display Phonemies® (Phonetic Symbols for Kids), nor does it allow you to download the mapped text into a document and choose fonts and other formatting options.

Miss Emma wanted children to be able to also see, instantly, the sound value of each grapheme as well as the grapheme boundaries.
The full MyWordz® technology provides this through the use of Phonemies®. They show the sounds.

Even if we show you which letters are the graphemes, can you pronounce it? Use it in a sentence? Tell us what it means? Not unless you already know the word.

This is what children experience throughout the day. Even if we Code Map® it to show the graphemes, they still don’t have all the information.

As adults, we can look up the phonetic symbols or Google the word to hear it pronounced. But that doesn’t tell us which letters are the graphemes, although, as skilled readers, we can usually work that out for ourselves.

This is why MyWordz® is a game changer. The technology shows which letters are graphemes AND their sound values.

All children need to do is learn the sound values of the Phonemies®. Until then, they can use the Phonemies® keyboard on the Monster Spelling Piano® app (available for a one-off fee in the App Store or Google Play) or through the MyWordz® technology itself. Then they blend the sounds.

They don’t need an adult to figure out the unfamiliar word for them, or to tell them how to spell it. And this is not assistive technology. Giving them the word does not help them developed orthographic knowledge or move into the self-teaching phase so that they can learn to read and spell with confidence and independence.

Adults could show them which letters are the graphemes and identify their sound values, but most don’t know how.

Would you be able to map the word “sugar” into the correct graphemes and give the phoneme for each one for your child, or the children you support?

And remember, the answer will depend on their accent.

So MyWordz® technology is also a game changer for YOU.

Show the Code is a speech-sound mapping system that make the grapho-phonemic structure of words visible by showing which letters form graphemes and the sound value of each grapheme.
