Luca

Are you thinking of using MyWordz® technology in your classroom, as a dyslexia specialist tutor, or as an AAC specialist?

Your students will thank you for doing so! If someone had given Luca this at age 5, he could have avoided years of struggling to understand how print and speech connect.

It’s INSTANT help, whether an adult is there or not.

“One of the biggest barriers to supporting spelling at the point of need is that many adults can’t map the words learners are struggling with. The phonemes they identify may be neither those expected by their education jurisdiction nor those the learner actually uses. Most have not been shown how to support the bonding of speech, spelling and meaning in the orthographic lexicon.

We therefore give older children the word-mapping technology and teach them the 60-Second Spelling Routine, so they can do it themselves.

Here, Luca, Grade 6 and severely dyslexic, is teaching himself to spell, for the first time.

This is why The Upstream Team launched First Ripple SEND Support. Prevention is far easier, and far less costly for everyone, than waiting for children to struggle and then trying to remediate those difficulties later.

But when remediation is needed, the answer isn't necessarily more explicit instruction. Many older learners are sick of being taught. They've had years of it. We want to give them the tools to teach themselves.

Show them the code. Show them how to bond speech, spelling and meaning. Then get out of the way.

Luca, diagnosed dyslexic, was doing exactly what we want: he used partial decoding to try to work out the word, using the GPCs he already knew: ‹ear› as in fear and ‹ear› as in bear, the two sound values he had been explicitly taught.

He had not been taught the sound value of ‹ear› that he needed to decode heard. Had the word appeared in context, we would expect him to decode it because he knows the word, and he would have applied Set for Variablty (SfV). This is why it is so important that we do not focus on words in isolation.

As it was presented in isolation, Emma Hartnell-Baker gave Luca the word mapped with Phonemies® so that he could see the sound value. He could then get to the word. This shows why Phonemies®, as phonetic symbols for children, matter so much.

Self-Paced Orthographic Learning (SPOL) is a term coined by Emma Hartnell-Baker. Grounded in the self-teaching hypothesis, it describes how children independently acquire new written spellings and letter patterns, word by word, as they read. Orthographic learning means committing the visual forms of words to memory so they can be recognised automatically.

In SPOL, self-paced learning means that children can progress according to their own orthographic learning needs, rather than waiting for whole-class instruction. The teacher therefore needs to have a really good understanding of how children learn to read, and how to map the Alphabetic Code. Self-teaching can begin after a sufficient kick-start of explicit instruction, or when a learner has the outstanding phonemic-awareness skills needed to bypass explicit phonics instruction and begin self-teaching.

Hartnell-Baker’s SPOL framework adds a practical layer: when a learner meets a gap, they can use MyWordz®’s bidirectional word-mapping technology to check the code and continue learning, rather than waiting for explicit instruction.

The graphemes are shown, but not the sound value - HEARD
The graphemes AND phonemes are made clear

When we Show the Code by identifying the graphemes and their sound values using Phonemies® and the Word Mapping Standard, adapted where necessary for accent, we add a support layer to Self-Paced Orthographic Learning (SPOL).

There are many uses for the MyWordz® bidirectional word mapping technology. Use the drop-down menu to see how it is currenlty being used.
