Silly SpellO Sentences
Bridging the gap between phonics and self-teaching reading and spelling using bidrectional word mapping activities.
We show learners which letters are the graphemes in each word because we want to see whether they know the sound value of those graphemes. This helps us understand how securely they know the Core Code and whether they are beginning to transition into the self-teaching phase.
If they don’t know the sound value of a grapheme, they can use the Monster Mapped® version to see the Speech Sound Code and check the sounds using the Monster Spelling Piano® app or MyWordz®.
The goal isn’t to keep explicitly teaching more and more code. Everything we do is designed to move learners away from reliance on explicit instruction and towards guided self-teaching, so that they increasingly have the knowledge and strategies to figure out unfamiliar words for themselves.
